Scyfion History and Identity
Origins — Odessa, Ukraine
In 2004, Ruslan Zamaskovny (co-owner) came up with a idea: Why not do their own bottlings using Ukrainian casks that had held wine or other spirits? Scyfion first experiment was an Imperial malt finished in Koktebel Madeira casks from a winery in Crimea. Released under the name Glen Karadag, a fusion of the Gaelic word for valley (glen) and the Crimean Tatar Karadag (black mountain).
The Odessa connection
Scyfion is, at its core, an Odesa based project, conceived in the Corvin pub, nurtured by the city's whisky culture. The original partner behind Scyfion label described Odessa as a beautiful city on the Black Sea shore with rapidly expanding community of whisky lovers and aficionados.
The concept
Scyfion's philosophy is to find the right whisky, transfer it to interesting wine casks for additional months, and taste it regularly until the balance is exactly right. The idea is not to overwhelm the distillery character, but to add new dimensions to it. Each cask is unique and used for the first time to mature whisky. The finishing period is always stated on the label.
The labels
Each label showcases a historical image, legend, or tradition tied to the country or region where the cask originated. For instance, the Benrinnes Pomegranate Cask label depictes the Battle of Avarayr (451 AD) between Armenians and Persians. It's significant, because the cask came from an Armenian pomegranate wine producer.
On Cigars, Whisky, and the Rooms That Hold Both
Cigars and single malt whisky have always kept company. Not merely for chemical reasons. The tannic smoke of a well-made cigar softens the paraffin edge, drawing out its smooth and raisiny heart. Both require patience. Both reward attention. Both carry the visible geology of time.
